My experience in Moot Court
Yamilet Tovar

Moot court is a competition where students argue a legal issue before a judge using precedents and past cases to support their position. When we first decided to compete in moot court, we did not realize how different it would be from mock trial. We were so used to preparing for trial that shifting to an appellate format felt overwhelming. Instead of focusing on witnesses and evidence, we had to research cases in depth and fully understand the precedents that shaped our arguments.
During the weeks leading up to the Youth and Government competition, I often felt stressed trying to memorize cases and anticipate possible questions from the judges. There were moments when I honestly wanted to give up. However, I am grateful that I did not, because the experience taught me so much about how appellate courts function and how legal arguments are built on constitutional interpretation and prior decisions. It gave me a new perspective on how our judicial system works beyond the trial level.
Before competition day, we had the opportunity to meet with a Skyline alumna, Patricia, who competed in moot court at the University of North Texas. Her visit made a significant difference in our preparation. She offered constructive feedback, shared practical tips, and helped us refine our arguments. Her guidance gave us more confidence and helped us understand what judges look for during oral arguments.
Although we did not advance to state, I am incredibly proud of our team. We were the first moot court team in our Legal Studies program, which is a meaningful accomplishment for both our program and our school. Being part of something new and helping build that legacy is something I will always value.
Now that I understand how moot court works, I would gladly compete again. I hope future students take the opportunity to participate and challenge themselves. My biggest advice to the next generation is to prepare as much as possible and to step outside of your comfort zone. The experience may be demanding, but it is also rewarding and unforgettable.
