Child Protective Services
By La'siya Canady -Jones
People always say Child Protective Services (CPS) is bad, that it takes kids away from their families for no reason, and that it isn’t fair, but truly, the real story is a lot more complicated than that. While it’s easy to hear horror stories online or from friends and think the whole system is against parents, CPS’s main job is actually to step in and protect kids who are in real danger from severe abuse or neglect. Taking a child out of a home isn’t a random or instant decision; social workers usually have to investigate, go through a judge in court, and try to offer families help first, like counseling or parenting classes. The system isn't perfect; caseworkers often have too many cases and not enough resources, but their primary goal is to keep kids safe while helping families get back on their feet whenever possible.
