Abortion has been one of the most debated legal issues in the United States for decades. In 1973, the Supreme Court enacted Roe v. Wade, a ruling that protected the right to abortion under the right to privacy in the Constitution. For 50 years, Roe v. Wade limited how much states could restrict abortion; however, in 2022, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization due to the Trump Administration. The Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution does not guarantee the right to abortion and returned much of the authority to regulate abortion to individual states.

The decision has created disagreements across the country. Supporters of Dobbs argue that abortion policy should be decided by elected state governments rather than the federal courts. Critics argue that overturning Roe v. Wade made it harder for some people to access abortions and reproductive healthcare and created rights depending on where someone lives. The debate continues to raise questions about constitutional rights, healthcare, personal freedom, and the limits of government power.
